Thymic Function

Meaning

The collective biological activities of the thymus gland, a primary lymphoid organ, primarily involving the maturation and selection of T-lymphocytes, which are essential components of adaptive immunity. While often viewed through an immunological lens, thymic function is intrinsically linked to the endocrine system, as thymic hormones and T-cell activity are modulated by circulating steroid hormones, particularly glucocorticoids and sex steroids. Optimal function is critical for robust immune surveillance and contributes significantly to overall longevity.
