Thrombosis

Meaning

Thrombosis is the pathological process involving the formation of a solid blood clot, or thrombus, within the lumen of a blood vessel, which significantly impedes or completely obstructs normal blood flow. This condition is a major clinical concern because a portion of the clot can dislodge and travel to distant sites, resulting in a potentially life-threatening thromboembolism. Certain hormonal states, particularly the use of some exogenous estrogen formulations, are known to influence the delicate coagulation cascade and alter this risk.
