Thrombocytopenia

Meaning

Thrombocytopenia is a hematological condition defined by an abnormally low concentration of platelets (thrombocytes) circulating in the peripheral blood, which significantly impairs the body’s ability to form blood clots and can lead to increased risk of bleeding and bruising. This clinical finding is a key indicator of underlying bone marrow dysfunction, increased platelet destruction, or sequestration in the spleen. It requires immediate clinical investigation to determine the etiology and prevent life-threatening hemorrhage.
