Thermic Stress

Meaning

Thermic Stress is the physiological strain placed upon the body’s homeostatic mechanisms by exposure to environmental temperatures significantly outside the thermoneutral zone, whether excessively hot or cold. This stressor requires the body to expend energy and initiate adaptive processes, such as sweating or shivering, to maintain core body temperature. Managed, intermittent thermic stress is a form of hormesis that can trigger beneficial metabolic and cellular adaptations.
