Thermal Physiology

Meaning

Thermal physiology is the specialized branch of human physiology that investigates the mechanisms by which the body regulates its internal core temperature, a process known as thermoregulation, in response to varying environmental and metabolic demands. The goal is to maintain the core body temperature within a narrow, life-sustaining homeostatic range. This intricate control system involves the coordinated function of the nervous system, the circulatory system, and the endocrine system. Hormonal status, particularly thyroid and sex steroid levels, significantly influences the body’s basal metabolic rate and capacity for heat production.
