Theca Cells

Meaning

Theca Cells are a specialized population of endocrine cells that form a distinct layer surrounding the ovarian follicle, playing an indispensable role in ovarian steroidogenesis and female reproductive function. They are functionally divided into the theca interna, which is highly vascularized, and the theca externa, a more connective tissue-like layer. Theca cells are the essential site for the synthesis of androgen precursors required for subsequent estrogen production.
