Theca Cell

Meaning

Theca cells are specialized endocrine cells located within the ovarian follicle, specifically situated outside the basement membrane surrounding the developing oocyte and granulosa cells. These cells are fundamentally responsible for synthesizing androgens, primarily androstenedione, which are essential precursors for estrogen production in the female reproductive cycle. Their function is directly stimulated by Luteinizing Hormone secreted from the anterior pituitary gland. Proper theca cell function is absolutely critical for follicular maturation and overall female hormonal balance.
