Th17 Cells

Meaning

Th17 Cells are a distinct and specialized lineage of T helper lymphocytes that play a crucial and dual role in mediating systemic inflammatory responses, particularly within the context of mucosal immunity against extracellular bacteria and fungi. They are uniquely characterized by their signature production of the cytokine Interleukin-17 (IL-17), a potent and versatile pro-inflammatory signaling mediator. While their function is essential for robust host defense, excessive or pathologically dysregulated Th17 activity is now implicated in the pathogenesis of numerous autoimmune diseases and chronic inflammatory conditions, underscoring their critical importance in both health and pathology.
