Th1/Th2 Balance

Meaning

Th1/Th2 Balance describes the crucial relative proportion and functional activity between the two major, opposing subsets of T helper lymphocytes: T helper 1 (Th1) and T helper 2 (Th2) cells. This dynamic equilibrium is paramount for a healthy and appropriately targeted immune response, with Th1 cells driving cellular immunity against intracellular pathogens and Th2 cells promoting humoral immunity and allergic responses. A chronic, sustained imbalance is frequently implicated in the pathogenesis of autoimmune conditions and systemic chronic inflammatory states, which can profoundly impact endocrine function.
