TGR5

Meaning

TGR5, formally known as the G-protein-coupled bile acid receptor 1 (GPBAR1), is a cell surface receptor activated by bile acids, which acts as a critical mediator of metabolic and energy homeostasis. Expressed in various tissues, including the liver, muscle, and brown adipose tissue, TGR5 activation signals the presence of bile acids, initiating a cascade that affects energy expenditure, glucose metabolism, and inflammation. This receptor is a compelling pharmacological target for addressing metabolic dysfunction, insulin resistance, and obesity, areas closely intertwined with hormonal health.
