TGF-β Pathway

Meaning

The TGF-β pathway, or Transforming Growth Factor-beta signaling pathway, is a ubiquitous and highly conserved molecular cascade that transmits the pleiotropic effects of the TGF-β superfamily of cytokines, which are essential regulatory proteins. This pathway is a critical master regulator of fundamental cellular processes, including cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and the dynamic remodeling of the extracellular matrix and subsequent tissue fibrosis. Dysregulation of this precise signaling mechanism is deeply implicated in the pathogenesis of chronic inflammation, autoimmune diseases, and various age-related fibrotic conditions.
