TGA Special Access Scheme

Meaning

The TGA Special Access Scheme (SAS) is a formal regulatory pathway in Australia, managed by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), that permits medical practitioners to legally access and supply unapproved therapeutic goods to individual patients. This scheme is specifically intended for cases where a patient is suffering from a condition that cannot be satisfactorily treated by any goods currently registered in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG). It serves as a compassionate mechanism to provide access to potentially critical or quality-of-life-improving treatments, including certain novel hormonal or peptide therapies, when no approved alternatives are available.
