Testosterone to Estrogen Conversion

Meaning

Testosterone to Estrogen Conversion, also known as aromatization, is the irreversible biochemical process by which the androgen testosterone is transformed into the estrogen estradiol. This conversion is a crucial step in steroid hormone metabolism, occurring primarily in adipose tissue, muscle, and the liver, and is catalyzed by the enzyme aromatase (CYP19A1). The resulting estradiol plays essential physiological roles in men, including maintaining bone density and regulating libido, but excessive conversion can lead to symptoms of estrogen dominance, such as gynecomastia. Clinically, managing this conversion is a key aspect of testosterone replacement therapy.
