Testosterone Glucuronidation

Meaning

Testosterone glucuronidation is a critical Phase II detoxification pathway, occurring predominantly in the liver and kidneys, where the active testosterone molecule is enzymatically conjugated with a glucuronic acid moiety. This conjugation process effectively converts the lipophilic, biologically active hormone into a hydrophilic, pharmacologically inactive metabolite, which is then readily and efficiently excreted in the urine. The rate of this metabolic clearance is a key determinant of the overall circulating testosterone concentration and serves as a clinically relevant biomarker for hormone turnover.
