Testosterone Flare

Meaning

A Testosterone Flare is a transient, acute surge in circulating testosterone levels that can occur shortly after initiating certain hormonal therapies, particularly Luteinizing Hormone-Releasing Hormone (LHRH) agonists used in the treatment of prostate cancer. This temporary elevation in androgen concentration is clinically significant because it can lead to a sudden, temporary worsening of cancer-related symptoms, such as bone pain or urinary obstruction. It represents an initial, paradoxical stimulatory effect before the drug’s intended long-term suppressive action takes effect.
