Testosterone-Erythropoietin Axis

Meaning

The Testosterone-Erythropoietin Axis describes the direct and synergistic endocrine relationship between the androgen hormone testosterone and the glycoprotein hormone erythropoietin (EPO), which is primarily responsible for stimulating red blood cell production in the bone marrow. This axis is crucial for maintaining optimal hematocrit levels, oxygen-carrying capacity, and thus physical endurance and vitality. Clinically, it explains the common observation of increased red blood cell mass following testosterone replacement therapy.
