Testosterone and Stress

Meaning

The reciprocal and often inverse relationship between the primary male sex hormone, testosterone, and the physiological and psychological state of stress, mediated largely through the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Acute or chronic stress triggers the release of cortisol, which is known to suppress the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, thereby lowering testosterone production. This dynamic interaction is a key mechanism by which modern lifestyle factors can contribute to androgen deficiency and related symptoms in both men and women. Maintaining a healthy stress response is vital for hormonal optimization.
