Testicular Senescence

Meaning

Testicular Senescence describes the progressive, age-related decline in the structural integrity and functional capacity of the testes, the primary male gonads. This process is characterized by a gradual reduction in Leydig cell number and function, leading to decreased testosterone synthesis, and concurrent changes in Sertoli cell function, resulting in impaired spermatogenesis. Clinically, this is the underlying physiological basis for late-onset hypogonadism, or andropause, a condition marked by lower circulating testosterone and a constellation of associated symptoms. Understanding this inevitable biological process is essential for guiding therapeutic strategies aimed at preserving male hormonal health and fertility.
