Meaning

Androgen Sensitivity describes the degree to which target tissues, such as skin, hair follicles, muscle, and bone, respond to the circulating levels of androgen hormones, like testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This responsiveness is fundamentally determined by the quantity and functional integrity of the androgen receptors (AR) located within the cells of these tissues. Clinically, variations in sensitivity, independent of absolute hormone levels, can explain diverse presentations, from acne and hirsutism to muscle development and libido. It is a critical factor in understanding individual responses to both endogenous and exogenous androgens.
