Meaning

Allostatic Load is a physiological term representing the cumulative, multi-system wear and tear on the body that results from chronic overactivity or underactivity of stress response systems, particularly the HPA axis, the sympathetic nervous system, and the metabolic and cardiovascular systems. It quantifies the long-term biological cost of repeated or sustained attempts by the body to maintain stability, or allostasis, in the face of persistent stressors. High allostatic load is a significant clinical predictor of chronic disease and accelerated biological aging, manifesting as chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, and profound hormonal dysregulation.
