Term 19

Meaning

Phase I Detoxification is the initial, essential biochemical process, primarily carried out by the Cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzyme superfamily in the liver, which chemically modifies lipophilic toxins, drugs, and endogenous steroid hormones to prepare them for excretion. This process involves oxidation, reduction, and hydrolysis reactions, transforming fat-soluble compounds into more polar, water-soluble intermediates. While necessary, this phase can generate reactive oxygen species and create metabolites that are often more chemically reactive than the parent compound, necessitating rapid progression to Phase II for safe elimination.
