Meaning

The Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis is the body’s central neuroendocrine system responsible for regulating the stress response, metabolism, and immune function. It represents a crucial, interconnected feedback loop between the hypothalamus in the brain, the pituitary gland, and the adrenal glands situated atop the kidneys. This axis governs the secretion of glucocorticoids, most notably cortisol, which is vital for survival and daily rhythm regulation. Dysregulation of the HPA axis is frequently observed in clinical presentations of chronic stress and fatigue.
