Teratogenicity

Meaning

Teratogenicity is the capacity of a substance, physical agent, or environmental exposure to cause structural malformations, functional deficits, or growth retardation in an embryo or fetus following maternal exposure during pregnancy. This clinical concept is a critical consideration in pharmacology and toxicology, particularly when prescribing hormonal or other active agents to women of reproductive potential. The effect is highly dependent on the dose, timing, and stage of fetal development.
