TBG

Meaning

TBG is the abbreviation for Thyroxine-Binding Globulin, a major glycoprotein synthesized predominantly by the liver that serves as the principal transport protein for thyroid hormones in the blood. TBG binds and carries the vast majority of circulating thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), rendering them biologically inactive and protecting them from rapid metabolic clearance. Fluctuations in TBG levels, often influenced by estrogen status or liver function, directly affect the total measured concentration of thyroid hormones.
