Tau Protein Accumulation

Meaning

Tau Protein Accumulation refers to the pathological aggregation and hyperphosphorylation of the tau protein, a microtubule-associated protein normally abundant in neurons. When hyperphosphorylated, tau detaches from microtubules and forms insoluble neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) within the brain cells. This accumulation is a hallmark pathology in several neurodegenerative conditions, leading to the disruption of axonal transport and eventual neuronal death, severely impacting cognitive and hormonal regulatory centers.
