Tau Hyperphosphorylation

Meaning

Tau hyperphosphorylation signifies the abnormal, excessive addition of phosphate groups to the tau protein in neuronal cells. Normally, tau stabilizes microtubules, vital for cellular structure and transport. When hyperphosphorylated, tau detaches, misfolds, and aggregates into insoluble neurofibrillary tangles, disrupting neuronal function. This process is a hallmark of neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s disease.
