Targeted Prebiotics

Meaning

Targeted Prebiotics are specific, non-digestible dietary fibers or oligosaccharides that are selectively fermented by a precisely identified, beneficial subset of the gut microbiota, with the intention of fostering the growth and metabolic activity of those particular strains. This contrasts with general fiber intake by focusing on the functional specificity required to enhance the production of key metabolites, such as butyrate, or to selectively crowd out pathogenic organisms. Clinical application requires a sophisticated understanding of the individual’s existing microbial profile.
