Target Cell Preparedness

Meaning

The optimal physiological state of a hormone-responsive cell, characterized by a sufficient number of functional receptors, appropriate post-receptor signaling machinery, and adequate energy reserves to accurately receive and execute the signal from a circulating hormone. This preparedness is essential for the effective communication of the endocrine system and determines the true biological impact of a hormone, irrespective of its circulating concentration. Reduced preparedness is a key mechanism of hormonal resistance.
