Tanycytes

Meaning

Tanycytes are specialized glial cells lining the floor of the third ventricle, particularly concentrated in the median eminence and infundibular stalk of the hypothalamus. These unique cells possess long processes that extend into the brain parenchyma or directly contact capillaries of the hypophyseal portal system. They function as a critical interface, mediating selective transport and communication between the cerebrospinal fluid and the systemic circulation, acting as a dynamic barrier.
