Tachyphylaxis

Meaning

Tachyphylaxis is a clinical phenomenon defined as the rapid and short-term decrease in responsiveness to a drug or hormone following its initial administration. This diminished effect necessitates an increase in dose to maintain the original therapeutic effect, often occurring after only a few doses. In endocrinology, it is frequently observed with continuous exposure to certain peptide hormones or agonists that lead to rapid receptor desensitization. Clinicians must be aware of this potential to avoid escalating doses unnecessarily and to manage patient expectations.
