T Cell Subsets

Meaning

T cell subsets are distinct populations of T lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell, each characterized by specific surface markers, cytokine profiles, and specialized immune functions. These subsets, including cytotoxic T cells, helper T cells (Th1, Th2, Th17), and regulatory T cells (Tregs), orchestrate the adaptive immune response by directly killing infected cells or by regulating the activity of other immune cells. The balance between these subsets is a critical determinant of immune health, inflammation, and autoimmune potential.
