T-Cell Differentiation

Meaning

The complex immunological process by which naive T lymphocytes, originating in the thymus, mature and commit to becoming specific functional subsets of effector and memory T cells, such as T helper (Th) cells, cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs), or T regulatory (Treg) cells. This differentiation is critical for mounting an appropriate, balanced, and targeted immune response against pathogens or altered self-cells. Hormones, particularly glucocorticoids and sex steroids, significantly influence the trajectory of this process.
