Systemic Vasodilation

Meaning

Systemic vasodilation is the widespread relaxation and resultant widening of the smooth muscle walls within the arterioles and small arteries throughout the body’s entire circulatory system. This essential physiological process leads to a significant decrease in total peripheral resistance, consequently lowering systemic blood pressure and improving overall blood flow and nutrient delivery to peripheral tissues. Various potent endocrine factors, including nitric oxide and certain sex hormones, are crucial and precise regulators of this vascular tone and function.
