Systemic Starvation

Meaning

A state of profound, organism-wide metabolic distress resulting from an extended absence of caloric intake or a severe, chronic deficit of essential macronutrients and micronutrients. This condition forces the body to initiate extreme catabolic processes, mobilizing energy from lean muscle mass and adipose tissue, and critically altering the balance of key survival hormones like ghrelin, leptin, and cortisol. It represents a complete failure of the energy balance homeostatic mechanism.
