Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Meaning

A chronic, complex autoimmune disease characterized by systemic inflammation that can affect virtually any organ system, including the skin, joints, kidneys, and central nervous system. In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), the immune system produces autoantibodies that target the body’s own tissues, leading to widespread damage and dysfunction. Hormonal factors, particularly estrogen, are strongly implicated in the disease’s prevalence and severity, with a significantly higher incidence in women of reproductive age.
