Systemic Insulin Resistance

Meaning

Systemic Insulin Resistance is a clinical condition where the body’s cells throughout various tissues—including muscle, fat, and liver—become less responsive to the actions of the hormone insulin, necessitating the pancreas to secrete progressively higher levels. This resistance disrupts glucose homeostasis, leading to elevated circulating insulin and glucose levels, which are primary drivers of metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular risk, and hormonal imbalance. It represents a critical failure in metabolic signaling across the entire organism.
