Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome

Meaning

Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome, or SIRS, describes a widespread inflammatory state throughout the body, typically occurring in response to a severe physiological insult. This can include infections like sepsis, significant trauma, pancreatitis, burns, or other non-infectious conditions that trigger a generalized inflammatory cascade. It represents the body’s initial, often protective, attempt to contain a threat.
