Systemic Inflammatory Response

Meaning

A generalized, non-specific physiological reaction of the body to a significant insult, such as severe infection, trauma, or major surgery, characterized by the widespread activation of inflammatory mediators throughout the circulation. Clinically, this response is often defined by a set of criteria including abnormal body temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, and white blood cell count. It represents the body’s attempt to localize and eradicate a threat, but if unchecked, it can lead to widespread tissue injury.
