Systemic Homeostatic Set Points

Meaning

Systemic Homeostatic Set Points are the genetically and environmentally influenced target values around which the body’s physiological control systems strive to maintain internal stability for critical variables like body temperature, blood pressure, blood glucose, and circulating hormone concentrations. These set points are not static but can be subtly modulated by factors such as age, chronic stress, and lifestyle, leading to a phenomenon known as allostasis or “wear and tear.” Maintaining set points within an optimal, narrow range is essential for metabolic and endocrine health.
