Systemic Allostatic Load

Meaning

The cumulative physiological burden or measurable “wear and tear” on the body’s neuroendocrine, cardiovascular, and immune systems resulting from chronic or repeated exposure to significant physical or psychological stressors. This load is objectively quantified by measuring the persistent dysregulation of primary stress mediators, such as cortisol and catecholamines, and their adverse downstream effects on metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers. A high systemic allostatic load signifies a state of chronic maladaptation and significantly increased long-term health risk.
