System Feedback Loop

Meaning

A System Feedback Loop is a foundational principle of human physiology describing a circular pathway where the output of a system, such as a secreted hormone, is monitored and then used to regulate the input to that same system. These loops are essential for maintaining physiological stability, or homeostasis, throughout the body. They can be negative, which acts to reduce the original stimulus and maintain equilibrium, or positive, which acts to amplify the original stimulus. The endocrine system relies entirely on these loops for precise hormone management.
