Synthetic Progestogens

Meaning

Synthetic Progestogens, commonly referred to as progestins, are a class of synthetic compounds that are structurally and functionally related to the naturally occurring hormone progesterone but are not chemically identical to it. These agents are designed to exert progesterone-like effects on target tissues, primarily by binding to the progesterone receptor, and are widely used in hormonal contraception, hormone replacement therapy, and the treatment of various gynecological conditions. Because of their modified molecular structure, they often exhibit distinct pharmacokinetic properties and varying degrees of affinity for other steroid hormone receptors, leading to a unique clinical side-effect profile compared to bioidentical progesterone.
