Synthetic Progestin

Meaning

A Synthetic Progestin is a man-made compound designed to mimic the biological effects of the naturally occurring steroid hormone progesterone by binding to and activating progesterone receptors. These agents are chemically distinct from bioidentical progesterone and are widely used in hormone therapy and contraception to induce progestational changes in the endometrium, suppress ovulation, and counteract the proliferative effects of unopposed estrogen. The specific chemical structure of each progestin dictates its unique spectrum of androgenic, estrogenic, or glucocorticoid side effects, necessitating careful clinical selection.
