Syndecan-1

Meaning

Syndecan-1 is a prominent transmembrane heparan sulfate proteoglycan found on the surface of many cell types, particularly epithelial cells, where it functions as a crucial co-receptor and adhesion molecule. This molecule is involved in complex cell-matrix and cell-cell interactions, playing a significant role in tissue morphology, inflammation, and cellular communication. Its expression levels are often used as a biomarker for epithelial integrity.
