Synaptic Connections

Meaning

Synaptic connections are the specialized junctions where one neuron communicates with another neuron or with a target cell like a muscle or gland. These microscopic gaps, known as synaptic clefts, facilitate the transmission of electrochemical signals, forming the fundamental basis of neural circuits throughout the nervous system. This process involves the release of neurotransmitters from the presynaptic neuron, which then bind to receptors on the postsynaptic cell, either exciting or inhibiting its activity.
