Synapse Formation

Meaning

Synapse Formation, or synaptogenesis, is the biological process by which neurons establish new connections, or synapses, allowing for chemical or electrical signals to be transmitted between cells in the nervous system. This continuous, dynamic process is fundamental to neuroplasticity, learning, and memory, and is significantly influenced by circulating endocrine hormones, such as estrogen and testosterone. Optimal synaptogenesis is a key indicator of neurocognitive health and longevity.
