Sustained-Release Preparations

Meaning

Sustained-release preparations are pharmaceutical dosage forms engineered to release a therapeutic agent, such as a hormone or medication, into the body over an extended period of time following administration. The primary clinical goal is to maintain a relatively constant, therapeutic concentration of the active compound in the systemic circulation, thereby reducing dosing frequency and minimizing the peaks and troughs associated with immediate-release formulations. This controlled delivery is often preferred for hormones that naturally exhibit steady-state or specific diurnal rhythms.
