Sustained Hypogonadism

Meaning

Sustained Hypogonadism is a chronic endocrine condition defined by the persistent and long-term failure of the gonads—the testes in males or the ovaries in females—to produce adequate levels of sex hormones, such as testosterone or estrogen. This deficiency is not transient but enduring, resulting in a spectrum of clinical symptoms including infertility, diminished libido, reduced bone mineral density, and adverse changes in body composition. Clinically, it requires continuous hormonal intervention to mitigate the systemic health consequences associated with a chronically low sex steroid environment. The condition is categorized as primary, secondary, or a combination of both etiologies.
