Sustained Cognitive Load

Meaning

Sustained cognitive load refers to the continuous, high-demand utilization of executive functions, working memory, and attentional resources over prolonged periods without adequate rest or recovery. Physiologically, this state places a significant, measurable demand on cerebral energy metabolism and can lead to the depletion of key neurotransmitters and increased oxidative stress in the brain. Chronic exposure to this load without proper support can contribute to cognitive fatigue and eventual neuroendocrine burnout.
