Sustained Attention Neurocircuitry

Meaning

The distributed network of essential neural structures, including the prefrontal and parietal cortices, and specific subcortical nuclei, responsible for maintaining a focused, vigilant state over prolonged periods to efficiently process information and execute complex tasks. The integrity of this neurocircuitry is highly dependent on a balanced supply of key neurotransmitters, adequate cerebral blood flow, and efficient neuronal energy metabolism. Impairment in this system leads to distractibility, reduced cognitive throughput, and mental fatigue.
